In March 1973 the Toad Lane Tenant's Association was formed and had an office on the second floor. In July 1973 the Association asked tenants to "Support the Toads in the fight against the Green Lizard oppressors!" "From a position of strength" it immediately started a successful rent strike. In two days $2,600 was paid to Toad Lane, and only $700 to Clarkson. Most rent was paid directly to the Asssociation, but the receiver charged in an affidavit that it was "created for the purpose of intercepting rent payments to permit the association to withhold rent collected and to bargain." Clarkson president Biddell notified tenants that his company would not accept rent from the Association. By 1974 Toad Lane claimed members of 2/3 of all tenants plus 50 children. The association published a "Toad's Breath" newsletter for members.
